Information security pros do put stock in encryption--it was named the third-most-effective security practice in our most recent Strategic Security Survey, behind only firewalls and antivirus products. However, there have been obstacles along the path to ubiquitous encryption of data, including weak ciphers, deployment and integration issues, and, perhaps most notably, key management.

OASIS begins Public Review of SKSML 1.0

The OASIS Enterprise Key Management Infrastructure (EKMI) Technical Commitee begins the 60-day Public Review of the Symmetric Key Services Markup Language (SKSML) v1.0, an XML-based protocol for symmetric encryption key-management services.  Anyone with an interest in key-management - including non-members of OASIS - is permitted to comment on the specification.
